A perennial grass of the grass family. It grows 30-70cm tall and has a panicle 5-7cm long. The rachis splits into two at the base, with two rows of spikelets on one side of each rachis. The spikelets are elliptical and spherical, about 3mm in size, and bear a single caryopsis. It has deep roots and grows like a lawn with strong runners. Native to South America, it was introduced to Japan in 1956 (Showa 31) and has become naturalized. It is cultivated in warm areas for animal feed and to prevent soil erosion.
