Nanda Devi [Mountain] (English spelling)

Japanese: ナンダ･デビ[山]（英語表記）Nanda Devi

The highest peak in the Garhwal Himalayas, Uttar Pradesh, India. Elevation 7,816m. The name means "blessed goddess." After a reconnaissance in 1934, a joint British-American team (HW Tillman et al.) was the first to reach the summit in 1936. A Polish team then reached the eastern peak at 7,434m in 1939. In 1951, a French team of two men attempted a traverse from the main peak to the eastern peak, but never returned. In 1976, a joint Japanese-Indian team was the first to successfully traverse from the eastern peak to the main peak. [Takayama Ryuzo]
