...In the Kojiki and Nihon shoki, the Yatagarasu (a crow with a blade of grass) is the messenger of Amaterasu Omikami, but even today, there are many shrines that consider crows to be messengers of mountain gods or ancestors, or to be divine messengers under the names Misaki or Misakigami. Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya, Taga Taisha in Omi, and Itsukushima Shrine in Aki also have a deep connection with crows, and hold the Crow Festival and Otoguishinji, in which offerings are made to crows and annual divination is performed. Even farmers who despise crows as pests on New Year's Day, actively invite the birds on the first day of shoveling and plowing in the New Year, calling them Karasu Kanjo, and consulting the will of the gods by predicting the harvest depending on whether they eat the rice cakes they throw, or by deciding whether to sow early, mid-season, or late rice depending on which of three food items placed in the rice field they peck at. …

…記紀では八咫烏（やたがらす）を天照大神の使者としているが，現在でもカラスを山の神や祖霊の使わしめと考えたり，ミサキ，ミサキ神などと称して神使としたりする神社は多い。名古屋の熱田神宮，近江の多賀大社，安芸の厳島神社などもカラスと関係が深く，カラスに神饌（しんせん）を供して年占をする烏祭，御鳥喰神事（おとぐいしんじ）が行われる。ふだんの日にはカラスを害鳥として憎みきらう農家でも，正月の鍬入れ，鋤初めの日には，烏勧請（からすかんじよう）などといって積極的にこの鳥を招き，投げた餅を食べるか否かで収穫の豊凶を占ったり，田の3ヵ所に置いた食物のいずれをついばむかによって，その年に早･中･晩稲のどれをまくかを決めたりするなど，カラスに神意をうかがった。…
