In the spring of 1212, near Cologne, Germany, a young boy named Nicholas, who claimed to have been "inspired by an angel," led several thousand peasants and herdsmen on a march to Italy, unarmed, with the plan of "crossing the sea on foot," with the goal of liberating Jerusalem. In the summer of the same year, in the village of Croix (south of Chartres), in France, a shepherd boy named Etienne, who claimed to have "met Christ in pilgrimage attire and been entrusted with a letter for the King of France," gathered around "30,000 boys and girls" who endured scorching heat and hunger to march to Marseilles on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. This event was combined with other events to be passed down by chroniclers about half a century later as a crusade performed only by innocent minors who believed in God's help.
