Hakubakai

Japanese:
Hakubakai

A Meiji period Western-style art group. In September 1896 (Meiji 29), Kuroda Seiki, Kume Keiichiro and others formed the group, consisting of painters, sculptors and printmakers who had left the Meiji Art Association, dissatisfied with its bureaucratic organization and gloomy style. Critics Yoshioka Horyo and Iwamura Toru also participated. The group's tendency was marked by the bright French plein air style introduced by Kuroda and Kume, and in October of the same year, it held its first exhibition in collaboration with the Japan Painting Association led by Okakura Tenshin, and continued to hold 13 exhibitions until its dissolution in 1910 (Meiji 43). During that time, painters Wada Eisaku, Fujishima Takeji, and Aoki Shigeru, and sculptor Ogura Sojiro produced masterpieces, gradually overwhelming the Meiji Art Association and becoming the mainstream of the art world. Incidentally, the name of the group comes from the fact that its members often discussed their experiences while drinking Shirouma (doburoku).
