Norway's longest and most voluminous river. Total length 611 km. It originates in the Dovre Mountains in central Norway, flows through the southeastern part of the country, and empties into the Oslo Fjord at Fredrikstad near the Swedish border. The lower reaches are also called the Glomma. The middle and lower reaches are covered with forests, where trees are cut down in winter and rafts are used to float the river in summer. There used to be many sawmills and pulp factories in the lower reaches, but these have decreased significantly in recent years and have been replaced by an increasing number of hydroelectric power plants. Since the Middle Ages, the lower reaches have been a natural defense line against Sweden, and several historic castles remain. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
