Pierre Puvis de Chavannes

Pierre Puvis de Chavannes
1824‐98
French painter. Born into a wealthy family in Lyon, he received a classical education. He studied under H. Scheffer, Delacroix, and Couture, but was particularly inspired by the murals at Chassériau's Palais des Accountants, and set out on the path of mural decoration. His style is characterized by flat, cut-out forms that give a primitive impression, cold, quiet colors, and motionless, still poses, and influenced Post-Impressionist and Nabi painters. In his early years, he was rejected from the Salon (official exhibition) eight times, but he began to receive recognition in the 1960s and soon became a leading figure in public architectural decoration, working on the wall decorations of Paris City Hall, the Sorbonne, the Pantheon, the Boston Athenaeum, and other places.
