1847‐1925
French colonial official and explorer. In 1869, he went to French Cochinchina as a soldier. In 1879, he was involved in laying telephone lines between Phnom Penh and Bangkok. At the same time, he explored and investigated various parts of Indochina, and became interested in ethnic groups, languages, cultures, and natural sciences. In 1886, he was appointed vice-consul in Luang Prabang, Laos. When the Ho people attacked Luang Prabang in 1887, he helped King Ung Kham escape and gained the king's trust. He also explored the Miao and Thai areas in northern Laos, laying the foundations for what would become French Laos.

フランスの植民地官吏，探検家。1869年フランス領コーチシナへ軍人として赴いた。79年プノンペン～バンコク間の電話線敷設に従事し，同時にインドシナ各地を探検，調査し，民族，言語，文化，自然科学に興味をもった。86年ラオスのルアンプラバンの副領事に就任し，87年にホー族がルアンプラバンを襲撃した際にはウン･カム王を助けて脱出し，王の信頼を得た。また北部ラオスのミヤオ族やタイ族の地域を踏査し，のちのフランス領ラオスの基礎を固めた。
