In order to rebuild the British economy, which had been hit hard by the return to the gold standard at the old parity (1925) and the subsequent Great Depression, the second Labour government appointed an advisory committee of leading academics, chaired by Scottish judge HP Macmillan, in November 1929. The official name of this committee was the Committee on Finance and Industry, but it was called the Macmillan Committee after its chairman.
