Mankoku - Mankoku

Japanese: 万石 - まんごく

A type of agricultural tool used to separate grains from husks. One to four sieve-like wire meshes with different mesh sizes are arranged diagonally, and grains are fed through a funnel attached to the top. There are single-layer and multi-layer types depending on the number of meshes. When unsorted brown rice and husks are put through the rice huller, the brown rice and rice grains fall through the appropriate mesh as they pass through the wire mesh, and the husks float up and are sorted. Modern rice hullers are equipped with a mankoku function, so they are rarely used. They are said to have been invented around 1680.

穀粒と殻をふるい分ける農具の一種。1枚から4枚のふるい状の網目の異なった金網を斜めに組合せ，最上部についているじょうごから穀粒を投入するようになっている。網目の数によって一重式と多重式がある。籾すり機にかけただけで未選別の玄米と殻の場合，金網を通る過程で，玄米，籾それぞれにその適した網目から落下し，殻は浮流して選別される。現在の籾すり機には万石の機能が組込まれているので，ほとんど利用されていない。延宝8 (1680) 年頃に発明されたと伝えられる。
