Iroquois people
Native Americans who lived mainly in the areas of Pennsylvania, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario. They were semi-sedentary and cultivated corn. Tribes consisting of matrilineal clans with totems developed into tribal confederations, which had political structures based on elections and opposed the French colonial period. They are known for their research on L. H. Morgan's Iroquois Confederacy.
