A haiku poet from the late Edo period. His real name was Yasui Masatane. After retirement he was called Soji. He was from Osaka. He ran a courier wholesaler. He was commonly known as Yamatoya Zen'emon, and his Edo branch was commonly known as Shimaya Saemon. His former wife was Yoshinobu (? -1679), and he later became a disciple of Ryota (1818-1787). He was initially familiar with the Danrin school of haiku, but had a wide circle of acquaintances, including Buson, and contributed to the movement to revive the Sho-style. He also influenced Issa. He never became a professional haiku poet, and maintained a position of "idiot haiku" throughout his life. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
