Akasaka Tenmacho

…Odenmacho and Minamidenmacho were responsible for the road baton-carrying service of providing a succession of laborers and baton-carrying horses from within Edo to the five main roads, as ordered by the shogunate, and Kodenmacho was responsible for the Edo-mawari baton-carrying service of providing official transportation and communication within Edo. Other towns attached to Odenmacho and Minamidenmacho were Yotsuya-batoncho and Akasaka-batoncho, which were established in 1638 (Kan'ei 15). The three baton-carrying towns were hereditarily controlled by Sakuma Zenpachi, Magome Kaneyu (Odenmacho), Yoshizawa Kazukei, Takano Shinuemon, Komiya Zenuemon (Minamidenmacho), and Miyabe Matashiro (Kodenmacho), who were head of Edo town headmen and baton-carrying officers. …

…江戸府内から五街道にかかる人足，伝馬の継立てを幕府の命により行うという道中伝馬役を負担した大伝馬町および南伝馬町，江戸府内限りの公用の交通，通信に従う江戸廻り伝馬役を負担した小伝馬町である。ほかに大伝馬町と南伝馬町に付属する町として1638年(寛永15)に起立した四谷伝馬町と赤坂伝馬町があった。三伝馬町は，名主役を兼ねた伝馬役人として江戸町名主の筆頭に位置した佐久間善八，馬込勘解由(大伝馬町)，吉沢主計，高野新右衛門，小宮善右衛門(南伝馬町)，宮辺又四郎(小伝馬町)により世襲支配されていた。…
