1779‐1823 Romanian educator. Born in Abrigu, Transylvania, which was under Austrian rule, he studied in Cluj, Sibiu and Vienna. In 1816 he moved to Bucharest and opened a school in the Monastery of Saint Sava, where he was the first to provide education in the mother tongue. Due to his influence, not only did many students who had previously studied at Greek schools transfer to Saint Sava, but future leaders of the national cultural movement also came from here. In 1821 he supported the Wallachian revolt led by Vladimirescu, but he soon fell seriously ill and returned to his hometown, where he died.
