Gheorghe Lazǎr

1779‐1823
Romanian educator. Born in Abrigu, Transylvania, which was under Austrian rule, he studied in Cluj, Sibiu and Vienna. In 1816 he moved to Bucharest and opened a school in the Monastery of Saint Sava, where he was the first to provide education in the mother tongue. Due to his influence, not only did many students who had previously studied at Greek schools transfer to Saint Sava, but future leaders of the national cultural movement also came from here. In 1821 he supported the Wallachian revolt led by Vladimirescu, but he soon fell seriously ill and returned to his hometown, where he died.

ルーマニアの教育者。オーストリア領であったトランシルバニアのアブリグに生まれ，クルジュ，シビウおよびウィーンで学んだ。1816年ブカレストへ移り聖サバ修道院に学校を開き，初めて母語による教育を実施した。彼の影響でそれまでギリシア人学校で学んでいた者が多数聖サバ校へ移籍したばかりでなく，のちの民族文化運動の指導者がここから育った。21年ワラキアのブラディミレスクの反乱を支持したが，やがて重病にかかり，生地に戻り死去した。
