The capital of Bhaktapur district in the eastern Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. It has a population of 130,000 (1993). It flourished as the capital of the Malla dynasty in the 14th-15th century and the 16th-18th century (during the division of the Malla dynasty). Its former royal palace is famous for its architecture, which showcases the finest Newar craftsmanship, including wooden carvings on windows, roofs, gates and other metalwork. The town is said to form a mandala, with temples of the Aṣṭamātrika (eight Hindu mother goddesses) located at strategic points, and the higher castes live in the center, while the lower castes live on the periphery.
