…No direct evidence of mathematics from the Indus civilization has been excavated, but the high level of planning seen in the architecture of its cities indicates a certain degree of development in surveying techniques. The mathematical knowledge of the Vedic period can be known, albeit incompletely, through the Śulbasūtra. This is a set of guidelines compiling rules for constructing the ritual sites required for the Vedic Śrauta rituals. The earliest of these are said to have been compiled in the 6th century BC, and the latest in the 2nd century AD. However, since each rule is essential for the realization of the ritual, it is thought that most of the mathematical knowledge found therein is as old as the history of the Śrauta rituals. …
