〘Noun〙① (Named after the golden Buddha statue enshrined in the hall and its décor that shone golden. One theory is that the Buddha was called a golden man, and so the hall in which the principal image of the Buddha was enshrined was named this way.) A hall in the center of a temple complex where the principal image of the Buddha was enshrined. Until the mid-Heian period, halls in which principal images were enshrined were generally called "golden halls," but after that they came to be called "main halls." *Shoki (720), April, 14th year of the reign of Empress Suiko (Iwasaki Hon Muromachi Period Translation) "A bronze statue measuring 60 cm will be placed in the Golden Hall (kontau) of Gangoji Temple." ② A hall that is pressed with gold leaf or inlaid with gold and silver. 〘名〙① (堂内に金色の仏像を安置し、また、その装飾も金色に光り輝いていたために名づけられたもの。一説に、仏を金人というため、本尊仏を安置した堂をこう名づけたともいう) 伽藍の中心で、一寺の本尊を安置した堂。平安中期頃までは、本尊を安置する堂を一般に「金堂」と称していたが、以後は「本堂」と呼ばれるようになった。※書紀（720）推古一四年四月（岩崎本室町時代訓）「丈六の銅の像を元興寺の金堂(コンタウ)に坐(ま)せます」② 金箔(きんぱく)を押したり、または、金銀をちりばめた殿堂。金色の堂。〔拾遺記‐一〇〕
