A religion derived from Babiism, which advocated Islamic reform in Iran in the first half of the 19th century. The founder of Babiism, Seyyed Ali Mohammad (1820-1850), launched a religious reform movement with the goals of reviving Shiiteism, abolishing existing religious rituals, and eliminating class discrimination, but was suppressed and imprisoned. His disciple Mirza Hussein Ali (1817-1892) and others fled to Baghdad and continued to preach, founding a new sect calling itself Baha'a Allah (the one whom God makes manifest), and later moving their base to Haifa in Palestine. They advocate peace and unity of mankind, equality between men and women, the spread of education, and the adoption of a world language, and although their qualitative differences from Islam make them popular, they have gained many followers (approximately 2 million) in Iran, India, Europe, and the United States. → Related article Toby Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
