…He studied at the University of Heidelberg, and in 1828 was appointed by the Institut de France to join the Greek expedition. After returning to Japan, he wrote On the Relation of Modern Greece to the Ancient World (1830) and other works. In 1833, he published the allegorical poem Athberys, which tells the history of mankind through the "Wandering Jew," and this epic poem later influenced Rimbaud. In 1841, he was appointed professor of "Southern European Literature" at the Collège de France, but in 1846, he was suspended from lecturing by the Minister of Education, Guizot, due to a series of lectures he gave with Michelet on the Jesuits in 1843, and a lecture on Ultramontanism the following year, which included an argument for the separation of church and state. …
