It generally refers to the religious and social movement that was promoted under the influence and guidance of Baba, the leader or elder of the Islamic mystical order (tariqa) in Anatolia just before the Mongol invasion in the 13th century during the Seljuk period of Rum. The Baba Ishaq Rebellion (1240), which temporarily plunged Anatolia into chaos, was one manifestation of this. The rise of the Karaman principality, which was a rival force to the Ottoman Empire for many years, is also related to the activities of Nūre Sūfī (meaning Light of the Sufis), who was also the leader of the Bābā'i movement.

ルーム･セルジューク朝時代，13世紀モンゴル侵入期直前のアナトリアにおいて，イスラム神秘主義教団(タリーカ)の指導者ないし長老たるババの影響と誘導のもとに推進された宗教･社会運動を一般的に指す。アナトリアを一時混乱に陥れたバーバー･イスハークの反乱(1240)などもその一つの表れである。多年にわたりオスマン朝の対抗勢力となったカラマン侯国の勃興も，バーバーイーBābā’ī運動の指導者でもあった始祖ヌーレ･スーフィーNūre Sūfī(スーフィーの光の意)の活動と関連する。
