A port city on the eastern end of Java, Indonesia. It faces Bali across the narrow Bali Strait. The name means "fragrant water." Population 76,596 (1971). A ferry runs between the city and Gilimanuk on Bali. The surrounding area is famous for its rubber, coffee, copra, rice, and bananas. During the Dutch colonial period, Fort Utrecht was built here.
