...Humans have lived here for about 9,000 years, and the earliest settlement was Motomachi, formerly known as Niijimamura. It is the island's western gateway and central settlement. On the east side of Chigasaki, at the northwestern end, is Okada, and Okada Port is used when the wind is from the west, and Motomachi Port when the wind is from the east. Habuminato, at the southeastern end, is an artificial port that was opened using the crater lake created by a major eruption around 860 (Jogan 2), and is important as a refuge port for fishing boats and a relay port to the southern islands. ...
