Also called raindrops. Cloud droplets with a radius of 100 μm or more. Drizzle raindrops are 0.5 mm or less in diameter, normal raindrops are 1 to 2 mm in diameter, and large thunderstorm raindrops are about 3 mm in diameter. The largest raindrop observed in Tokyo was about 0.2 g, and if spherical it would be 7 mm in diameter, but normally raindrops over 0.5 mm become ellipsoids that are squashed vertically, and when they grow larger they split up, so there are almost no raindrops with a diameter of 5 mm or more. Small ones fall at a speed of 2 m per second, large ones at 10 m, and usually 4 to 6 m. → Related topics Rain | Ice crystal theory Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
