Shinsaibashi-suji

Japanese:
Shinsaibashi-suji

A street that runs from north to south through the southern part of Chuo Ward, Osaka City. It is about 750 meters from Shinsaibashi to Ebisubashi. Shinsaibashi is a bridge that spanned the old Nagahori (filled in, a parking lot), and today, a stone arch bridge that was replaced in 1909 (Meiji 42) remains as an overpass. It is said that during the Genna era (1615-1624), Fushimi townsman Okada Shinzo Shinsai and others excavated the Nagahori, and in 1662 (Kanbun 2), built a bridge in front of his own house, which became Shinsaibashi. Shinsaibashi-suji connects the tea houses and restaurants of Horie and Shinmachi with the theater district of Dotonbori, and initially the north end prospered, but after the Meiji era, the south end prospered. The Midosuji subway line opened in 1937, and the Nagahori Tsurumi Ryokuchi subway line opened in 1996. The downtown shopping district, centered around the Daimaru and Sogo department stores (closed in 2009), has developed into a place with many specialty stores selling Western goods, jewelry, musical instruments, and more. Americamura and Europe Street are also bustling areas for young people.
