Honnoji Temple

Honnoji Temple

It is the head temple of the Hokke Honmon school of Buddhism, located in Shimohonnoji-cho, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City. Founded by Nichiryu in 1415 (Oei 22), it was originally located in Gojo-bomon and called Honno-ji, but in 1533 (Eikyo 5), it was moved to Rokkaku-Omiya and renamed Honno-ji. It was burned down during the Tenbun Rebellion (1536), and in 1545 (Tenbun 14), it was given a temple area of four blocks in Shijo Nishinotoin, and the large hall with over 30 sub-temples was rebuilt, making it the largest of the seven reconstructions. However, in 1582 (Tensho 10), it was attacked by Akechi Mitsuhide while Oda Nobunaga was staying there and burned down, and during the reconstruction, it was relocated to its current location in 1589 after Toyotomi Hideyoshi's land readjustment. In 1864 (Genji 1), the temple burned down again in the Hamaguri Gomon Incident, so a temporary main hall was built, and the current main hall was completed in 1928 (Showa 3). In keeping with Nichiryu's last precepts, this temple was used as a training center for missionary work, while Honkoji Temple in Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, was used as a training center for teachings. Neither temple used a mountain name, and both temples had the same head priest system, but after the 108th abbot, they were separated. Within the temple grounds is the main mausoleum of Nobunaga. The temple's treasures include national treasures such as Emperor Hanazono's imperial handwriting and the remaining scrolls of ancient poetry said to have been written by Fujiwara no Yukinari.
