A publishing company founded by Kikuchi Kan. In January 1923, Kikuchi Kan established Bungeishunjusha at his home and began publishing Bungeishunju. Initially it was privately owned by Kikuchi Kan, but in May 1928 it was reorganized as a joint-stock company, with Kikuchi Kan becoming president. It subsequently published film, theater, and women's magazines, but currently only All Yomimono and Bungakukai remain. The Akutagawa Prize and Naoki Prize were established in 1935, and the Kikuchi Kan Prize in 1939. The Japan Literature Promotion Association, a foundation established in 1938, handles the awarding of these prizes. When the Second Sino-Japanese War broke out in 1937, Bungeishunju: Incidents Special Edition was renamed Local Report and made a monthly publication (1938), Taiyo was launched (1939), and the Manchuria Bungeishunjusha was established in 1943, strengthening the company's support for the war effort.
