Joruri. Historical piece. 10 acts. A collaboration between Shiba Shibaso and Tsutsui Hanji. The first seven acts were first performed at the Edo Hizenza in 1788. Three acts were added when it was performed again the following year at the Satsumaza. The story is based on the previous Joruri works such as Katakiuchi Osananogatari (Vengeance Tale of a Child), and includes the story of Kotaro, son of Tamiya Genpachi, a swordsman from the Marugame Ikoma family, who killed his father's enemy Hori Gentazaemon in 1641. The fourth act, "Shido-ji" (also called "Shido-dera"), which depicts the loyalty of Tamiya Botaro's wet nurse Otsuji, is known as a large piece that requires the strength of both the chanter and the shamisen player. Toyosawa Danpei II, a master shamisen player from the Meiji period, collapsed on stage while performing this piece and died shortly thereafter. It is also performed as a Kabuki play.
