Hanagasakurage - Hanagasakurage

This jellyfish belongs to the order Hydroids, class Hydrozoa, and family Anemonidae. It is large for a hydromedusa, with a diameter of the umbrella usually 4-5 cm, but sometimes it can reach 10 cm. The umbrella is low and dome-shaped, and of the four rays, two opposing ones are bifurcated into two, making a total of six. In addition to 10-15 long, slender thread-like umbrella-edge tentacles, many short, rod-like tentacles are found on the umbrella edge and on the upper umbrella, and the total number can reach more than 200. The tentacles on the upper umbrella are connected by afferent tubes. In addition, many umbrella-edge tubercles and equilibria can be seen on the umbrella edge. The gonads develop by forming folds on the rays. The mouth stalk is reddish brown, the gonads are brown, and the tentacles on the upper umbrella are red and purple, making the whole thing extremely beautiful. It is found along the coasts of Honshu and Kyushu in spring, but the polyp stage is not yet known.

腔腸(こうちょう)動物門ヒドロ虫綱ヒドロイド目ハナガサクラゲ科に属するクラゲ。ヒドロクラゲとしては大形で、傘の直径は普通4、5センチメートルであるが、ときには10センチメートルほどに達することもある。傘は低い円蓋(えんがい)状、4本の放射管のうち相対する2本は2分岐して計6本となっている。10～15本の細長い糸状の傘縁触手のほかに、棒状の短い触手が傘縁のほか上傘上にも多数みられ、その総数は200以上に達することがある。上傘上の触手は求心管でつながっている。また、傘縁には多数の傘縁瘤(りゅう)や平衡器がみられる。生殖腺(せん)は放射管上にひだをつくって発達する。口柄(こうへい)は赤褐色、生殖腺は褐色、上傘上の触手は紅色と紫色で、全体としてきわめて美しい。本州、九州の沿岸に春期みられるが、ポリプ世代はまだ知られていない。
