...The edges of the face and flesh of the person are blurred with a dark color such as vermilion to emphasize the three-dimensional effect, or the folds of the clothing are shaded to create a sense of unevenness on the surface. Conversely, the edges are blurred with a light color of the same type, white, or gold paint to create a halo effect (also called a shining halo). The technique of kumadori is said to have become popular in China due to the influence of the shading technique practiced in India and the Western Regions....
