1877‐1966 A Russian-born Islamic scholar. He studied law at Moscow University and joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During World War I, he participated in the Turkish-Iranian Border Demarcation Committee, which prompted him to turn to Oriental studies. After the Russian Revolution, he moved to Paris, and taught Iranian studies at the School of Oriental Studies in London from 1932 to 1944. He has made outstanding achievements in research into philological historical geography using Arabic and Persian historical materials, Kurdish history, and the history of the Safavid dynasty's official systems.
