Japanese: 鬼節 - おにぶし

...This is to slowly remove the moisture that gradually seeps out from inside the knots by allowing them to cool. After the knots have been roasted and dried, they are called "arabushi" or "onibushi" and have a rough surface and are burned black-brown. The arabushi are dried in the sun for several days.

…In Buddhism, due to the tales of the filial piety of the Venerable Mokuren, which appear in the Ullambana Sutra and other texts, large-scale Ullambana ceremonies were held in temples from the late Six Dynasties onwards to save the lost souls. For this reason, it was later called Oni-setsu (the "demon" meaning ghost). Thus, by the end of the Six Dynasties, Obon had already become a common holiday for both Taoism and Buddhism, with households going out to visit graves and temples building boats to carry the spirits who would come to receive memorial services, and burning them at night. …
