[Died] December 30, 1988. New York, New York. American sculptor. Born to poet Yone Noguchi and an American writer. Spent his childhood in Japan, and traveled to the US alone in 1918. At the age of 20, he decided to become a sculptor. He studied medicine for a time, but returned to sculpture, trained in New York, and won the Guggenheim Prize in 1927. He studied in Paris, France, under Constantin Brancusi, and returned to the US in 1929. He created abstract sculptures using metal, which attracted the attention of critics. From 1929 to 1931, he traveled around Asia. After that, he created sculptures for architectural decoration using terracotta and cement. In the 1940s, he created many abstract sculptures using stone and wood. He visited Japan several times after 1949, and experimented with sculptures using Bizen and Oribe ware ceramics. He was also active as a furniture, stage set, and costume designer. His representative works include "Portrait of Anna Marie Markel" (1929, Buffalo Art Museum), "Expanding Universe" (1932, Toledo Museum of Art), and "Kouros" (1945, New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art). The Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum is located in New York.

アメリカ合衆国の彫刻家。詩人野口米次郎とアメリカ人の作家との間に生まれた。幼時を日本で過ごし，1918年単身渡米。20歳のとき彫刻家を志した。一時医学を学んだが彫刻に戻り，ニューヨークで修業し，1927年グッゲンハイム賞を受賞。フランスのパリに留学しコンスタンチン・ブランクーシに師事，1929年アメリカに帰国。金属による抽象彫刻を制作し批評家の注目を浴びた。1929～31年アジアを旅行。その後テラコッタ，セメントを用いて建築装飾の彫刻を制作。1940年代には石や木による抽象彫刻を多く制作した。1949年以後数回訪日し，備前焼，織部焼の陶器の彫刻を試みた。家具，舞台装置，コスチュームのデザイナーとしても活躍。代表作『アンナ・マリー・マーケルの肖像』 (1929，バッファロー美術館) ，『拡大する宇宙』 (1932，トレド美術館) ，『クーロス』 (1945，ニューヨーク，メトロポリタン美術館) 。ニューヨークにイサム・ノグチ庭園美術館がある。
