A group of 19th century American painters who painted landscapes set along the Hudson River as it flows north from New York to Canada. T. Cole is generally considered to have been the pioneer. Starting around 1825, he and his friend Henry Inman and others painted the majestic landscapes of the Catskill Mountains, White Mountains, and other areas in meticulous detail. Cole's method was to draw closer to God by depicting nature in minute detail, based on the position that the natural scenery is the very image of the holy God. After Cole's death in 1848, his successors, including Asher Brown Durand, Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900), and John Frederick Kensett, were active, but they went beyond Cole's artistic views and developed landscape paintings based on realism.
