Around 1287 - 1347 He was Archduke of Bavaria (1302-47), King of Germany (1314-47), and Holy Roman Emperor (1328-47). He gained the support of the anti-Habsburg faction and defeated Frederick the Beautiful at the Battle of Mühldorf (1322), but was excommunicated after a dispute with the Pope, who claimed the right to approve the election of the king. After the Italian campaign (1327-30), he strengthened his alliance with the electors and the king of England, and while keeping the king of France in check, he refused to allow the pope to intervene in the elections of kings and emperors (the Electors' Judgment and Imperial Law of 1338).
