…After spending a few months in Germany as a governess in 1905, he published Where Angels Fear to Tread, which deals with the conflict between the conventional and hypocritical British Herriton family and an open-minded and materialistic Italian who marries a young widow who has run away from the family, with sympathy for the latter. In his second work, A Long Journey (1907), he portrays the protagonist Ricky, who is torn between three people: Ansell, who represents freedom and truth in Cambridge; Agnes, who represents the philistine world in London; and Steve, a child of nature in Wiltshire. In A Room with a View (1908) and Howards End (1910), he also wrote in precise prose about the necessity and difficulty of combining with a different culture, reaching the level of a kind of critique of civilization. …
