A bivalve mollusks of the Pectinidae family (illustration). The terms "sun and moon shell" are used, although they are Japanese-English terms. The shell is circular, with only slight bulges, and is smooth and shiny. The right shell is pale yellow-white and the left shell is red, which resembles the moon and the sun, hence the name. There are small ear-like projections on both sides of the apex of the shell, and the upper edge is straight. The inside is white with a yellow periphery. There are 45 to 52 paired thin ribs radiating out. The soft body is yellowish, and the edge of the mantle membrane has many reddish-brown thread-like tentacles, between which are the mantle eyes.
