A resort town in the state of Upper Austria in central Austria. Population 14,000 (1991). One of the centers of the scenic Salzkammergut. A source of rock salt since ancient times. After a Protestant uprising in 1601-03 was suppressed, the town was demoted from a market town, as it had been in 1466, to a village as a warning to others. In the 1820s, it came into the spotlight as a therapeutic spa due to the beneficial effects of its salt springs, and in 1854 the Austrian emperor's summer palace was established there. Until World War I, it was a summer resort for nobles and famous musicians. It later took on the characteristics of a tourist destination, and in 1940 it was incorporated as a city.
