Kyudai Main Line - Kyudai Main Line

The name of the Kyushu Railway Company's track that runs through central Oita Prefecture and southern Fukuoka Prefecture. 141.5 km from Kurume to Oita, single track, non-electrified. One of the Kyushu Transcontinental Railways, it runs along the Chikugo River, its upstream Kusu River, and the Oita River, with cities such as Hita in between. The Oita-Onoya section is the oldest, opened in 1915 (Taisho 4) as the Oyu Railway, and nationalized in 1922 (completed in 1923 with a gauge changed from 762 mm to 1067 mm). From 1923 to 1933 (Taisho 12 to Showa 8), the Onoya-Amagase section was opened under the name of the Oyu Line, and from 1928 to 1934, the Kurume-Amagase section was opened under the name of the Kyudai Line, and was integrated into the Kyudai Line after completion. In 1937, it became the Kyudai Main Line. In 1987, with the privatization of the Japanese National Railways, it became part of the Kyushu Railway Company. Nicknamed the Yufu Highland Line.
