Tai people - Tai (English spelling) Dai
A minority ethnic group of Dai living in the southern part of Yunnan Province in southwest China. Population: about 1 million (1990). Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture and Dehong Dai Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture have been established. Formerly known as Paiyi or Po. They live in the basins of the Lancang River (Mekong River), Longchuan River, and Taiping River (a tributary of the Ayeyarwady River), and have been engaged in wet rice cultivation since ancient times. They also produce tea and camphor. They practice a sect of Buddhism that was introduced from Burma (now Myanmar). They have a phonetic scripture that was introduced from the south, and Buddhist scriptures and their history are written in this script. During the Yuan and Qing dynasties, feudal lords (tusi) who were given official positions by the Chinese dynasty ruled over the peasants.

中国南西部の雲南省南部に居住するタイ系の少数民族。人口約 100万 (1990) 。シーサンパンナ (西双版納) タイ族自治州とデホン (徳宏) タイ族チンポー (景頗) 族自治州が設立されている。以前はパイイ (擺彝) ,ポなどと呼ばれた。瀾滄江 (メコン川) や竜川江,太平江 (エイヤーワディ川の支流) の流域に住み,古くから水稲耕作に従事し,そのほか,茶や樟脳の生産も盛んである。ビルマ (現ミャンマー) から伝えられた部派仏教が信仰されている。南方から入った表音文字があり,仏教経典や彼らの歴史はその文字で記されている。なお,元~清代には,中国王朝から官位を与えられた封建領主 (土司) が農民を支配していた。
