A former town in Iishiro District, eastern Shimane Prefecture. It borders Hiroshima Prefecture to the southeast and is mostly mountainous. In the past, it produced a lot of charcoal, but in recent years it has produced rice, beef cattle, melons, tomatoes, wasabi, shiitake mushrooms, etc. National Route 54 runs through the town, and the 3.6km Tonbara Road, which avoids the difficult heavy snowfall of Tsugaka Pass and Fukiga Pass, was opened in 1964. In January 2005, it merged with Akakai Town, Iishiro District, to become a town called Iinan Town. Area: 124.86 km2 . Population: 2,914 (2003).
