French author. Born in Brest. After graduating from the National Agricultural Technical School, he traveled around French colonies as an agricultural engineer, but wrote his debut novel, The Traitor (1978), in 1949. He subsequently published The Eraser (1953), The Peeper (1955), Jealousy (1957), and In the Labyrinth (1959), which attracted attention for their inorganic style, which was devoted to the visual description of things, and received mixed reviews. At the same time, he attacked traditional realist novels in a polemical critique published in Tou le novelle (1963), and became a spokesman for the so-called nouveau roman.

フランスの作家。ブレストに生まれる。国立農業専門学校を卒業後，農業技師としてフランス領植民地を回ったが，1949年に処女作《弑逆（しいぎやく）者》(1978)を書く。その後《消しゴム》(1953)，《覗く人》(1955)，《嫉妬》(1957)，《迷路のなかで》(1959)を発表して，事物の視覚的描写に徹する無機的な作風が話題を呼び，賛否相半ばしたが，同時に《新しい小説のために》(1963)に収録された論争的評論で伝統的リアリズム小説を攻撃し，いわゆるヌーボー･ロマンの代弁者となった。
