From the Azuchi-Momoyama to the mid-Edo period, Christian missionaries who were not priests were called irman. It is a corrupted version of the Portuguese padre (meaning "father"). Famous missionaries include Xavier, Torres, Villela, Frois, Cabral, Organtino, Coello, Valignani, and Sotelo.
