American Scene Painting

Japanese: アメリカン･シーン･ペインティング（英語表記）American Scene Painting

A general term for paintings depicting scenes from American cities and rural areas from the 1920s to the 1930s. It includes a variety of trends, but can be broadly divided into two series: a semi-abstract series influenced by Cubism, and a realistic series. The former was mainly set in New York, and included artists such as Stella Joseph, Charles Sheeler, and Davis, who celebrated modern civilization and used motifs of the Brooklyn Bridge and high-rise buildings, and who extracted the vitality of big cities. The latter included artists such as Marsh Reginald, who captured scenes of everyday life at the city's bottom, Hopper, who depicted loneliness and alienation, and Shahn, who was a consistent advocate of social realism.

1920年代から30年代にかけて，アメリカの都市や農村の光景を描いた絵画の総称。さまざまの傾向をふくむが，大きく分けるとキュビスムの影響をうけた半抽象的な系列と写実的な系列の二つがある。前者の舞台になったのは主としてニューヨークで，ブルックリン橋や高層建築をモティーフとして，近代文明を謳歌するステラJoseph Stella，シーラーCharles Sheeler，大都市のバイタリティを抽出したデービスがおり，後者には都会の底辺の日常の光景をとらえたマーシュReginald Marsh，孤独と疎外を描いたホッパー，ソーシャル･リアリズムsocial realismの立場を貫いたシャーンがいる。
