President of Cuba (in office 1940-44, 1952-58)
He rose through the ranks from a low-ranking soldier to become president in 1940. In March 1952, he was re-elected president in a bloodless coup, but his extremely repressive policies caused a backlash from the people, and in July of the following year, a leftist guerrilla rebellion led by Castro broke out. Castro's guerrilla struggle became more active from 1956, and finally, on January 1, 1959, he handed over the capital, Havana, to Castro and fled to the Dominican Republic (Cuban Revolution). He died in Spain, where he had been in exile, in 1973.

下級兵士からしだいに昇進して，1940年には大統領に当選。1952年３月，無血クーデタで再び大統領となり，極端な弾圧政策をとったため国民が反発，翌年７月にはカストロの率いる左派ゲリラの反乱が起こった。カストロのゲリラ闘争は1956年から活発になり，ついに59年１月1日，首都ハバナをカストロに明け渡してドミニカに逃亡した（キューバ革命）。1973年亡命先のスペインで死去。
