1901〜73 President of Cuba (in office 1940-44, 1952-58) He rose through the ranks from a low-ranking soldier to become president in 1940. In March 1952, he was re-elected president in a bloodless coup, but his extremely repressive policies caused a backlash from the people, and in July of the following year, a leftist guerrilla rebellion led by Castro broke out. Castro's guerrilla struggle became more active from 1956, and finally, on January 1, 1959, he handed over the capital, Havana, to Castro and fled to the Dominican Republic (Cuban Revolution). He died in Spain, where he had been in exile, in 1973. Source: Obunsha World History Dictionary, Third Edition About Obunsha World History Dictionary, Third Edition |
