Schefferville

Canada's largest iron ore producing region. It lies in the central part of the Labrador Peninsula, near the border between Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador. It developed in the early 1950s when the rich iron deposits in the area began to be exploited. The mines are powered by the Churchill River Generating Station, and the iron ore is transported south by a 580 km private railway to ports on the St. Lawrence River, such as Septille and Port-Cartier. Population 303 (1991).
