A perennial plant of the Primulaceae family. It is native to North America and has about 30 species. Its Japanese name is Katakurimodoki. It is not widely cultivated in Japan, but species such as D. meadia L. (English names: shooting star, American cowslip, prairie pointer), D. patulum Greene (= D. clevelandii Greene ssp. patulum (Greene) Thomps.), D. hendersonii A.
