Futagaoka - Narabigaoka

Japanese:
Futagaoka - Narabigaoka
A hill in Omuro, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City. Ichinooka Hill, 116m above sea level, is located to the north, and Ninooka Hill and Sannooka Hill are located to the south, so the hill is named after it. It is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty. There are a total of 19 ancient tombs on the slopes of the three hills (Futagaoka Tomb Group), with Myoshinji Temple and Hokongoin Temple on the western foot and Ninnaji Temple on the northern foot. There used to be twin ponds on the eastern foot of Sannooka. Located in the northwestern suburbs of Heian-kyo, the area was a hunting ground for the emperor since ancient times, and aristocrats built mountain villas at the foot of the mountains (one of these, the residence of the Minister of the Right, Kiyohara Natsuno, later became Hokongoin). It is said that Yoshida Kenko, the author of Tsurezuregusa, once lived at the western foot of Ninooka, and his grave and a monument to his poem can be found in the grounds of Chosenji Temple at the eastern foot of Ichinooka. Both Futagaoka Hill and the twin ponds are utamakura.
