Ryuho

Japanese:
Ryuho

A haiku poet of the early Edo period. Nonoguchi. His given name was Chikashige. He was also known as Shoemon. His other names were Shoo, Shosai, and Nyosen. He was from Kyoto. He was called Hinaya due to his family business, and was also called Beniya. He was an elder of the Teimon school, but he had a dispute with his fellow student Shigeyori over the editing of "Enokoshu" (1633), and left his master. He established his own elegant haiku style after that. He moved from Kyoto to Edo, Fukuyama, Osaka, and other places, and trained many disciples, returning to Kyoto in his later years. He studied renga and waka poetry from an early age, and was well versed in the classics, writing "Jujo Genji" and "Osanana Genji," which are summaries of "The Tale of Genji." He was also skilled in painting, and his light and witty brushwork has earned him the title of the father of haiku painting. His anthologies include "Haikaihokucho" and "Komachi Odori," his etiquette and haiku treatises include "Hanahigusa" and "Kawabune Tsutoku Banzai," and his haiku collection is "Soratsubute."
