A city in Irkutsk Oblast in the central south of Russia. It is located on the Angara River near where the Ilim River, a tributary on the right bank, joins the Angara River. Population 105,500 (1999). There is a timber complex and a construction materials industry (gravel, crushed stone, concrete). The city was established in 1966 on the site of the construction and industrial base of the Ust-Ilim Hydroelectric Power Plant (output 4.32 million kilowatts), and became a city in 1973.
