Battal Gazi

Battal Gazi
A Turkish heroic tale. Based on the story of Abd Allah al-Battar, an Islamic religious warrior (known as a ghazi) who played an active role in the Umayyad Caliphate's Byzantine Anatolian campaign (717-740), this is a folk heroic tale perfected among the Turks of Anatolia in the 11th and 12th centuries. It includes elements of fantastical tales, such as those about campaigns to India and China, and shows Persian influences that are distinct from the traditions unique to the Turks. It was widely passed down as a tale, and was especially respected by the Shiite and Bektashi sects.
